VMworld 2017 Europe – Day -1

Posted Leave a commentPosted in VMworld

We with all the talking and alcohol consumption, I forgot to eat enough 🙁 Today was tough! I got a little later than expected to the conference center. Checked in which went fast and walked down to Hall 8. On the way I met numerous people, had a chat with a few of them, making me late for the session is was aiming for, before finally bouncing into my colleague Heino Skov. Being late and all I joined him and went back to the VMvillage where we went hunting for power outlets. Note to VMware, we are not in the […]

As I’m writing this I’m still at home. Haven’t finished packing. Well I have emptied my pockets in my jacket and cleaned out in my l aptop bag, but the suite case is still 100% empty. Just put the kids to bed and gonna go downstairs to have dinner with my wife. I’m flying in tomorrow. There will be plenty of time to pack tonight. Touch down in BCN is around 14:00, before it all goes down. I’m hoping to have time to write a blog post everyday during VMworld. Only time will tell if I actually pulls this of […]

Using Log Insight query API with Powershell

Posted 2 CommentsPosted in Log Insight

Log Insight is such an underrated tool. As a consultant I use it all the time, it makes it simple and fast to find issues and solutions. Frankly speaking any VMware shop not running Log Insight is letting there company down. There is multiple ways to get insight out of Log Insight. You can use the GUI; setup webhooks for third party intergration; get it to send you an email; send alerts to vRops or use the Log Insight API. The API is split into two, an ingestion API and a query API. Today I am going to show you […]

In this next part of the serie. I am going to dig into the E300-8D’s technical specifications, show case its good and bad sides and talk about noise and power consumption. A closer look at E300-8D from the […]

The NUC killer: SuperMicro SuperServer E300-8D

TOC Part 1: The NUC killer: SuperMicro SuperServer E300-8D Part 2: SuperMicro SuperServer E300-8D deep dive Part 3: SuperMicro SuperServer E300-8D 2 years later   I bought two SuperMicro SuperServer E300-8D a few months ago and they only seems to get better as I get to know them better. The SuperMicro SuperServer E300-8D is replacing my old lab, which was excessively small and inadequate. It was based on Dell PCs, which was limited to only 8GB of memory. With 8GB of memory, there is not much I can get up and running in a state where I was happy with […]

Intel Optane the new benchmark SSD to beat

Posted Leave a commentPosted in Hardware, vSAN

Intel Optane the new benchmark SSD to beat   For a very long time Intel 3700 series of SSDs has held the crown as the best all round SSD for the enterprise market. Intel did something special with this line of SSDs. They stop talking IOPS and latency at least as the main focus and started focusing on where it really would hurt mainstream storage vendors. What was new was QoS or consistency and power loss protection. These features are enterprise graded. Many vendors will claim that they have power loss protection, but non-like Intel did and even today, you […]

Log Insight upgrade path

Posted 1 CommentPosted in Log Insight

Log Insight 4.3 has just been released. I guess it is a good time to talk about upgrading and what path to follow and what is the Log Insight upgrade path. I am only gonna focus on Log Insight 3.x or newer. Basically if you are not running Log Insight 3.x or newer, you really should upgrade asap. There is now reason to wait any longer. You are just making it worse by waiting! Log Insight upgrade path Upgrading Log Insight is quite simple. Log Insight is a incremental update process. Meaning you can not skip an update. If you […]

vRops upgrade path

This is just a quick guide to the vRops upgrade path. I work a lot with vRops in different aspects. As of late I have been running in to a few environments which has not kept up with vRops’s release cycle. Needles to say vRops has come a long way from 5.8 or 6.0. Last week vRops 6.5 was release and once every quarter(or so) a new release will come out. In that sense, it is good to know how to upgrade from one release of vRops to the next or more so to the latest. vRops does not require […]
